Summative Assignment Details
The Essay Topic:
Increasingly, science fiction or fantasy films that deal with technology as the evil or fearful 'other' are becoming less and less frequent in contemporary western culture. Instead, films that deal with psychological or spiritual 'others' are increasingly the focal point of films of this genre.
Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? Provide examples from your own discussions and from films.
Discuss your answer and make specific reference to at least 3 films (at least two of the films you discuss must be from the Course film list-- the third can be of your own choosing if you wish).
Specifics about your assignment:
You may choose to discuss the topic above in terms of gender, culture, science, the supernatural, technology or emotion (or a combination of these). How you decide to structure your essay is entirely up to you, and I encourage you to dialogue with me about ideas. I will, as well (and as part of the formative assessment in this course), continually offer you support and feedback in your Journal entries as and when they may prove relevant for your final essay.
Although you have the freedom to construct your final essay in a style and structure of your choosing, you must comply with the following:
Your essay must include at least 2 of your own postings from the Course in which you discuss your own ideas about technology, gender or emotion. These will serve as illustrative examples. You may choose these postings from any of the discussion forums or Journal activities throughout the entire Course.
Do not worry: if you are participating in the Course as it progresses, you will have a great deal of your own material to choose from
(Remember: whilst I have said that any journal and discussion forum in this course is not summatively/finally assessed, they will support your learning as you construct your understandings and knowledge about fantasy, science fiction, horror, gender, technology and culture. Your contributions to the communicative elements of this Course are vital to your own learning and to the learning of others).
Formatting your Essay:
You must produce a 3000 word essay on the above topic (or one cleared in writing by me before April 19th) as your summative assessment for the Course. The essay must be word processed in 12 point font (preferably Arial or Times New Roman). The essay must be double spaced and have 1.5 inch margins on the right and left sides. References and in-text citations must conform to a consistent and recognized standard. You may use the standard provided in this course if you wish, or you may use a different one, but it must be consistent and complete. The Course Referencing Standard will be posted in the Administrative Area closer to the time of assessment.
