Why do we/should we talk about emotion?
Why do we/should we talk about emotion?
Because science is seen as 'hard' and reasonable, whereas arts and fiction are seen as 'soft' and open to 'emotional attachment'-- indeed, why make a film or create a text if not to tell a story that will invoke an emotional response? Moreover, because emotion is a theme specifically linked to technology in our first two films, I'd like us to ponder the idea of emotion a bit deeper than we have thus far. You have all, by now, done the Journal Activity: Initial Thoughts and the Forum Activity: Initial thoughts. If you have not, please do so now before going any further.
The goal of this section is to introduce you to some literature on the subject of emotion from varying perspectives. You are here asked to explore emotion by definition, location and discussion and then partake in two quizzes dealing with emotion and film. Finally, you are asked to read the article by Zembylas and Vrasidas which deals with the idea of emotion from a theoretical perspective, specifically in terms of elearning.
Task:
What I would like you to do at the end of this section (after you have finished the readings and the Quizzes) is to return to both your Journal Activity: Intial Thoughts and the Forum Activity: Initial thoughts and make a short posting that reflects any new ways of thinking about emotion and emotional reaction in film, context, circumstance, etc.
It is significant that you do the readings and quizzes on emotion after you have made your Initial Thoughts Journal and Forum postings and then return to these to add new thoughts.
